Not technically a coffee drink, but firmly part of the iced latte world, the matcha latte has become a favorite for wellness-conscious and design-loving guests. Its bright green color is naturally eye-catching, and it feels lighter and more mindful than very sweet iced coffees.

Why matcha wins

Matcha offers a calm, steady energy (thanks to L-theanine) rather than a sharp jolt. Whisked with a little water and poured over milk and ice, it becomes creamy, slightly grassy, and gently sweet — a beautiful afternoon pause.

Ingredients (1 drink)

  • 2g ceremonial-grade matcha powder (1 tsp)
  • 30ml warm water (just under boiling, ~80°C)
  • 10ml honey or vanilla syrup (optional)
  • 120g ice
  • 180ml cold milk (oat or whole)

How to make it

  1. Sift the matcha into a bowl to remove lumps.
  2. Add the warm water and whisk in a zig-zag motion until frothy.
  3. Fill a tall glass with ice and add the milk (and sweetener if using).
  4. Pour the whisked matcha over the top and stir.

Pro tips

  • Use ceremonial-grade matcha for drinking — culinary grades can taste bitter.
  • Don't use boiling water; it scorches matcha and turns it bitter.
  • Sift first to avoid clumps that won't dissolve in cold milk.

Key takeaways

  • Ceremonial matcha tastes smoother than culinary grade.
  • Whisk with warm (not boiling) water for best flavor.
  • Sift the powder to prevent clumps in the cold drink.
