The Dayton Mall corridor is built for errands, not lingering: big parking lots, big stores, and a lot of coffee that tastes like it. The good news is that some of the best independent shops in south Dayton are five to ten minutes from the mall, and if you order ahead you can be back in the car with a real drink before your next stop.
How the area lays out
The mall sits at the corner of Miamisburg Centerville Road and Wilmington Pike, with Interstate 75 on one side and I-675 on the other. Uptown Centerville is just up Wilmington Pike and Main Street, and Dayton Lebanon Pike runs east toward Washington Township. That triangle is where the local coffee is.
Uptown Centerville, six minutes up the road
House Blend Cafe — 58 E Franklin St, Centerville. This is our shop, so weigh the recommendation accordingly. We are open Saturdays only, 10 AM to 2 PM, September through the Saturday before Christmas, which makes us a weekend stop rather than a weekday fix. What makes us useful on a mall day: you can order online and pick up without waiting, parking is behind the building with street parking nearby, and we are a pay-what-you-want cafe, so anything you pay above the suggested price goes to charity and helps buy Christmas gifts for kids at Centerville Schools. If you are shopping in October or November, this is a two-minute detour from the Franklin Street shops. See our menu and the location details.
Along Main Street in Centerville
Coffee Hub Centerville — 450 N Main St. A convenient stop between the mall and downtown Centerville, and easy to hit on the way to the grocery store.
ContempoRoast — 967 S Main St. On the south end of Centerville, which makes it a natural stop if you are coming or going via State Route 48.
East toward Washington Township
Nutmeg Cafe — 9166 Dayton Lebanon Pike, Washington Township. A neighborhood bakery-cafe a few minutes east of the mall. A good reason to take the long way home.
A short drive north
If the mall trip has you heading north anyway, the Oakwood and Kettering picks are close: Tastefully Roasted — 6 Oakwood Ave, Oakwood, Central Perc European Cafe — 2315 Far Hills Ave, Oakwood, and Epic Coffee Shop — 22 W Stroop Rd, Kettering.
How to fold coffee into a mall run
- Order ahead when you can. On a Saturday, ordering online and picking up saves the ten minutes you would spend in a line, and it keeps the drink hot for the drive.
- Pair the errand with a walk. Park in uptown Centerville, get coffee, walk Franklin Street, then drive the two minutes to the mall. The errand feels less like an errand.
- Go before noon. Saturday mid-morning is the sweet spot here: the shops are open, the parking is still easy, and the roads north and south of the mall are calm.
- Know the seasonal hours. Ours are Saturdays only, and many independent shops in the area trim hours in the winter. Check before you drive, especially in December.
